Duchess Quartet by Eloísa James

Duchess in Love, the first book in Eloisa James’ Duchess Quartet, introduces us to some of the most scandalous duchesses in London.

Gina, Duchess of Girton, has asked her long-estranged husband to return from Greece and grant her an annulment, so she can remarry.  They were quickly married 10 years earlier, when she was only 12 years old, and he fled the country on their wedding night. He returns, planning to grant her the annulment, but of course, being a romance novel, things can’t possibly be that simple!

The novel also introduces us to Gina’s three friends — also duchesses who have unusual marital situations, including the “Infamous Esme.” Their stories continue to develop through the rest of the quartet while new characters are also introduced. Eloisa James has filled these novels with historical detail and characters in interesting situations, which elevates them above the typical boy-meets-girl (or duke-meets-girl) romance.

Readers who enjoy this should definitely check out Eloisa James’ Desperate Duchesses series, and Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton Series.
