Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson

Phoebe and Her Unicorn: A Heavenly Nostrils Chronicle  by Dana Simpson

This adorable middle-grade graphic novel series begin as nine-year-old Phoebe, bored and skipping stones across a pond, accidentally hits a unicorn in the face with the stone.  The unicorn, who we soon find out is named Marigold Heavenly Nostrils, grants her one wish.  Her wish: that the unicorn will become her best friend.

With full color panel illustrations, Dana Simpson has created memorable characters in Marigold, Phoebe, her parents, and her frenemy, Dakota, and the world and it's rules are fully developed. Wonder  why no one seems surprised that Phoebe is walking around with a Unicorn? It's because of her Shield of Boringness that makes everyone see her as uninteresting.

There are five books in the series (so far?) -- and these would be wonderful for the elementary/middle school reader.  And while kids are the intended audience, the humor is a real treat for the adult reader, with sly digs at those of us who grew up in a time before smartphones and high speed internet.

This series is available both in print and as an ebook through Hoopla. And if you enjoy reading about Phoebe, there are obvious comparisons to Calvin and Hobbes (which of course, I recommend!), and besides that, readers may also enjoy other middle grade graphic novels such as Princeless, Roller Girl, and all of the titles by Reina Telgemeier.
