The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood


Surely, you've heard of The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood by now, with the show receiving thirteen Emmy nominations. But do you know what it's about? Or, have you watched the show and now you're interested in reading the book while you wait for the next season?

It takes place in a dystopian near-future where fertility is more precious than gold. Women who can have children become handmaids and serve households of higher-ups in the military that overthrew the United States and turned it into Gilead. We follow the story of one handmaid as she figures out how to survive in Gilead.

If you enjoy The Handmaid's Tale, you might also like some other classic dystopian fiction: 1984 by George Orwell, or Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.
