Through the Woods by Emily Carroll

Through the Woods is a collection of five short horror stories; each more terrifying than the last. Even the most ardent horror fan will find at least one story to give them goosebumps. Our Neighbor’s HouseA Lady’s Hands Are Cold, My Friend Janna, The Nesting Place, and His Face All Red (which started out as a breakout webcominc and can still be found at www.emcarroll.comare all tied together under the guise of being a bedtime tale and a warning for a child. Through the Woods serves as a chilling reminder to us all that most strange things come from the woods.

I was amazed by Through the Woods. It is both creepy and clever. The art is gritty and the colors work with each other to alternately complement and contrast, giving the story a jarring, emotional quality.

If you enjoy Through the Woods, you should also check out the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series by Alvin Schwartz, Anya's Ghost by Vera Brosgol, or Doll Bones by Holly Black. These spooky stories and many more are available at your local Virginia Beach Public Library location.
