Cookies and Cups Cookbook: 125+ Sweet & Savory Recipes Reminding You To Always Eat Dessert First by Shelly Jaronsky

I know it goes against the grain for those of us that were raised to clean our plates so that we could have dessert but I have to say I like Shelly Jaronsky's style.  She obviously believes in her mantra strongly enough to include it in the book's title, "Always eat dessert first."   New cookbook, Cookies & Cups, is the very first cookbook from this successful food blogger.  You can visit her food blog by the same name and not be disappointed.

Shelly has such a warm introduction to her book and you can tell right away that she is all about what works best for you. I will caution you, however, to not skip the Rule No Rules section that follows the introduction.  Especially if you tend to dive straight into the recipes head first.  Not that you can't do what floats your boat with the kitchen equipment you may or may not have, but where she talks about ingredients please pay attention to her advice.  For example, her use of salted butter in her recipes, which I know many bakers consider a forbidden rule.  I also am a salted-butter baker. Sure, you can use the unsalted, but it will affect the outcome of the recipe because all her recipes are tested using salted butter.  The same goes for her use of Kosher salt.  Using regular table salt in the amount measurements called for in her recipes will produce an overly salty baked good.  It's just another occasion where she gives you good advice to make simple adjustments based on your preferences.  I also like the fact that she embraces a short cut here and there if it's needed.

The first chapter showcases a variety of recipes she thinks you should master. Then, it's on to sweet breakfast treats, cookies, brownies and bars, cakes, frostings, pies and party snacks.  True to her mantra, the savory things are listed last in the book. There she starts with pizza and pasta, then has chapters dedicated to salads and sammies, and includes family favorites as well.

Jaronsky also has a variety of specialty recipes in this book that are right on trend.  Shelly confesses her addiction to salted caramel baked goods, and includes a great caramel sauce recipe along with other salted caramel baked items to try.  There are also uses for browned butter, flaked sea salt and Shelly even uses pretzels in a vanilla buttercream frosting that is sure appeal to the pallet of anyone that craves things both salty and sweet.  How cool is that?  I already have a long list of things I want to try.  Hope you are as inspired as I am.
