Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari

23453112Modern Romance by Aziz Ansari

Aziz Ansari is probably best known for his role on Parks and Recreation, but his new book, Modern Romance is definitely not your typical celebrity memoir.

Instead, it is a book of popular social science -- Ansari has collaborated with Eric Klinenberg, NYU sociologist, to research the ways in which modern technology has changed the way in which we now conduct romantic relationships.  They conducted interviews and focus groups in cities both around the world and online.

Through a series of anecdotes, Modern Romance takes on the problems of modern dating ("Why hasn't he texted me back?!"), the search for a soul mate when there are so many choices, and different ways technology has changed the dating landscape in other countries (the section on Toyko is especially interesting).

I would highly recommend listening to this one on audio -- it's read by Aziz himself, and he keeps even the dry research-y bits interesting.  Even if he does mock the listener for being lazy and not reading the book themselves ;).

For audiobook listeners who enjoy celebrity memoirs read by the authors -- check out Tina Fey's Bossypants and Mindy Kaling's Why Not Me?

Readers who enjoy the pop social science aspects of Modern Romance might also enjoy Freakonomics (also great on audio), Nickel and Dimed, and An Economist Gets Lunch.
