I may have mentioned already this week, but it bears repeating: I love Lemony Snicket. He is easily my favorite author. So you can imagine how ecstatic I was last month when I stumbled upon a series of his that I had not yet read! A series that might be called a prequel (of sorts) to the first series of his that I ever read, The Series of Unfortunate Events.
This series is called All the Wrong Questions and it focuses on a young Lemony Snicket as be begins his apprenticeship in a mysterious organization with a name that has yet to be revealed. Each book in the series is titled after one of the "wrong questions" he asked during this apprenticeship. The first one is, "Who Could That Be at This Hour?"
In "Who Could That Be at This Hour?" young Snicket has just completed his "unusual education" and has chosen his chaperon (the person he is now apprenticed to). Snicket is extremely clever and has some things of his own to take care of, so he intentionally chose the worst chaperon available which the hope that he will stay in his hometown to finish his work. Unfortunately that's not how things worked out. Instead he and his chaperon are immediately hired to find a stolen item in a town called Stain'd-by-the-Sea and Snicket is swiftly whisked away from his plans.
This series is well paced and entertaining. Like all his work is written in Lemony Snicket's distinctly unusual style, and is full of dry humor, verbal witticisms, and extremely polite children.
