I have chosen a theme for this week of reviews – YouTube. If you don’t know what YouTube is, I would like to thank you for spending your first day on the internet at the VBPL Recommends blog. Go ahead and check out YouTube; this review will still be here after you watch 17 hours of cat videos. Anyway, all of the books this week were written by YouTube “celebrities.” Enjoy!
You Deserve a Drink is the name of Mamrie Hart’s YouTube channel. It is also the name of her first book, a memoir. Both the channel and her book include customized drink recipes, terrible puns, pop culture references, and tremendously embarrassing stories. She has no shame. None. She set out to write a truthful memoir that isn’t sanitized to make her look good. There are stories here that could make a dead man blush or cringe like when she and her college friends took a vacation at what turned out to be a nudist resort, or when Mamrie organized a pole-dancing class for her friend’s bachelorette party. Each chapter has a theme and a themed drink to go along with it. The stories are uniformly hilarious but almost all of them are NSFW (Not Safe For Work if you never looked up that common internet warning).
Hart’s writing is very conversational. There are various asides and call backs and several funny pictures of her. There are footnotes where she comments on her own stories or expounds upon a pop culture reference. She uses her background as a bartender and sketch comedy lifer to spin hysterical yarns for the reader. I have not tried any of the drink recipes but if you did while reading the book, I imagine it would be like sitting at a bar and being regaled by a funny, chatty, and shameless bartender all night. There are lessons learned here and there but for the most part this book is about a funny, young woman who has found success by being herself, which is a pretty great lesson on its own.

P.S. Happy Labor Day!
