Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Scott Westerfeld has a new book out this week called Zeroes. To celebrate that, let's talk about one of his older young adult novels, Uglies, which started a trilogy (the other books are Pretties and Specials, plus a fourth book set after the events of the trilogy, called Extras) and spawned a number of supplemental books, including a series of graphic novels, one that gives another side of the story called Shay's Story, a book of essays called Mind Rain, and a behind-the-scenes look at the world of the Uglies series called Bogus to Bubbly.

In the world of Uglies, Tally Youngblood is eagerly awaiting her birthday, when she will get the surgery to become a Pretty, like everyone does when they turn sixteen. But her new friend, Shay, accidentally ruins those plans for Tally by running away, and by doing so, drags Tally along on a wild adventure outside of their seemingly utopian city, showing her the truth behind the safe world she thought she knew.
