The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear by Don Wood

A little mouse has just found a lovely, red, ripe strawberry when he is warned of the big hungry bear who—it turns out—loves red, ripe strawberries! Now frantic to save his strawberry, the mouse will go to great (and sometimes silly) lengths to hide, disguise, and protect his strawberry so that no big hungry bears can eat it. But will he succeed?

The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear is one of my all-time favorite picture books. I grew up reading it, and even planned my first library program around it! It is fun and whimsical and makes a great read-aloud. The pictures are brightly illustrated and full of soft shading and intricate textures.

If you love this book, try some of Audrey Wood’s other picture books. I especially love The Napping House, a silly story about a lot of people and creatures all piling up in one small bed, and Piggies, a wordless picture book about our fingers and the little piggies that live and play there.
