Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke

The young dragon, Firedrake, has undertaken a dangerous journey to return to the hidden city at the Rim of Heaver in the Himalayas. This is the only place where silver dragons can remain safe from the destruction of humans. Firedrake is joined by a funny and sarcastic brownie named Sorrell and an orphaned human boy named Ben. During their voyage, this group of friends encounter basilisks, djinn, and sea serpents, and more. While under constant threat from Nettlebrand, a malicious creature created by the alchemist Petrosius Henbane and intent on destroying them.

Cornelia Funke is a master storyteller, and she doesn’t disappoint in Dragon Rider. Lighthearted yet suspenseful, this book is especially great for younger readers. Occasional black and white illustrations help tell the story and depict some of the more unusual characters.

If you want more light-hearted books about dragons, check out Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George. Or if you’re looking for something darker, start with book one of the Inheritance Cycle: Eragon by Christopher Paolini. These books and many more are available at your local Virginia Beach Public Library.
