Jim Henson's Tale of Sand by Ramon Perez

Originally, Tale of Sand was written as a feature-length screenplay, but it was never produced. Ramon Perez - with the blessing of Lisa Henson, Jim Henson's daughter - adapted the story into a beautiful and mystifying graphic novel.

The story is an adventurous one, following Mac from an unfamiliar town across the southwestern part of America as he interacts with all manner of unusual people and creatures. A large portion of the story is told without words, leaving the story in the hands of the more-than-capable illustrations.

If the unusual world discovered and explored in this tale appeals to you, you might also enjoy some other Jim Henson works with elaborate, strange settings, like Labyrinth (also a novelization of the film) and the movie Mirrormask (based on the graphic novel by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean).
