Gulp by Mary Roach
Do you have questions about the digestive system and the process of eating and digesting that you always wanted to ask, but were too afraid to? If so, then I have good news for you. Mary Roach has answered them all in this funny and informative book about all things related to digestion, Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal. The journey starts with appealing topics such as taste and the act of chewing, and ends with... well, where digestion ends.
It's gross, it's taboo, it's entertaining, and it's educational! Mary Roach takes pride in her research and her approachable delivery of science to the layperson, and it shows in Gulp. If you enjoy this amusing foray into the taboo, you might also like Roach's other similar books: Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, and Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex. (None of which are recommended for children.)
