A Perfectly Messed Up Story by Patrick McDonnell

A book for perfectionists (and budding perfectionists) of all ages, Patrick McDonnell's whimsical and yet insightful A Perfectly Messed Up Story is a great choice for reading aloud. At least, my five year old grandson loves it.

Basically, the book starts off to tell the story of a boy named Louis.  Louis wants to tell the perfect story, but circumstances (jelly stains, finger prints, and other intrusions skillfully incorporated into the illustrations) get in his way.   Will Louis get to finish his story?  Is there such a thing as a perfect story?  Can everything really be all right if it's not exactly perfect?

Many adults and far too many children struggle with perfectionism.  Louis' story goes a long way toward showing that what matters is not the circumstances we find ourselves in so much as how we respond to those circumstances.
