Whitechapel: The Ripper Returns

When a woman's body is found with her throat cut in Whitechapel, Detective Inspector Joseph Chandler is assigned to head the investigation.  Heading up a murder case is the last stop on his fast track to promotion, and this case, a likely domestic killing, seems straightforward enough.  But Chandler's staff aren't impressed with their new boss, a 'paper policeman' with book knowledge but little experience.  They'd really like it if he'd just stay out of their way and let them do their jobs.  Chandler is  determined to prove himself and be in charge.

Enter Edward Buchan, a 'ripperologist' who comes forward to proclaim that their murderer is copying the famous Jack the Ripper, who perpetrated his crimes in the same area of London.  At first, Buchan is dismissed as a loony.   But as a second woman is found dead, it becomes apparent that he may be on to something.

Whitechapel: The Ripper Returns is a short series - only 3 episodes, but it packs a whole lot of action into each show.  There's not only the suspense of trying to discover the killer's identity, but also the drama created as the two worlds of law enforcement - the street and the desk - collide and learn to work together.

If you enjoy British police procedurals and mysteries, VBPL owns a wonderful collection of DVD and print material.   If you like your mysteries with more of an edge, like Whitechapel, then Broadchurch, starring Doctor Who's David Tennant, is a great choice. Or for a lighter, cozy mystery feel, try Midsomer Murders. If you are interested in knowing more about the original Jack the Ripper, we've got that covered as well.
