Deadman Wonderland, Volume 1 by Jinsei Katoaka

Tokyo is still reeling from a massive earthquake that devastated the city nearly ten years ago.  One of those touched by the earthquake is Ganta Igarashi, a typical high school student whose life is about to be turned upside down.  Right before the Ganta’s class is to visit Deadman Wonderland, Tokyo’s privately owned prison, they are brutally attacked by the “Red Man.”  Ganta is blamed for the crime and sentenced to life imprisonment at Deadman Wonderland.  Once Ganta arrives, life as he knew it is over and he is learning about life on the inside.  Now Ganta must fight for his survival and also discover the truth behind his classmates’ deaths.

Deadman Wonderland is a dark look at humanity.  Katoaka has created a fantastical world filled with supernatural monsters, but also looks to the monsters that dwell within humanity.  The characters are interesting and move the story onward.  With so much action, the artwork is difficult to follow at times.  However, there are clever uses of the color of red, which adds a haunting quality to the story.  The first volume sketches out an intriguing storyline that makes a reader wish to continue to read the following volumes.  This title is for adults as there are adult situations, graphic violence, and some adult language.

You can find Deadman Wonderland, Volume 1 by Jinsei Katoaka on the VBPL Catalog.  If you enjoyed Deadman Wonderland, you may want to try Black Lagoon by Rei Hiroe or Attack on Titan by Hajime Isayama.
