Bedtime Stories

As a parent, you know one of the most anticipated and stressful times of day is bedtime. Or maybe you just like reading picture books. Either way, let me suggest some of my faves that have worked wonders at my house.

Thank You, Octopus by Darren Farrell is a delightful new picture book about a young boy and his helpful best friend Octopus getting ready for bed. Octopus draws him a nice bath (of potato salad), washes him off (with a tuba) and helps him put his pajamas on (...on top of the Statue of Liberty!). This book will have you and your little one laughing as you practice saying both "Thank you" and "No thank you, Octopus".

Let's Sing a Lullaby With the Brave Cowboy is another in a long series of great picture books by Jan Thomas. A "brave" cowboy is lulling some cows to sleep with a calming ditty, but keeps being frightened by sticks, flowers, and even the cows themselves. Don't fret! Eventually the cows and your little buckaroo are lullaby-d to dreamland.

Ahh, the classics. Want to know why Goodnight Moon is loved by generations of children and parents? Because IT WORKS! Follow along with the baby rabbit as he says goodnight to all the things he sees in his room and the sky outside. Play the part of the old lady whispering, "Hush" and before you know it, your little bunny will be quietly mumbling, "Good night noises, everywhere".

Are those kids still up? Try The Prince Won't Go to Bed by Dayle Dodds, Sam McBratney's classic Guess How Much I Love You, or the beautifully illustrated Sleep Like a Tiger by Mary Logue.
These titles are all available at VBPL and will have you checking your Twitter and binge watching Orange Is the New Black before you can say, "Sweet Dreams".
