School will soon be in session and homework excuses will likely arise shortly after the first day. Students can use I Didn’t Do My Homework Because… by Davide Cali as a source to discover fresh justifications for returning to class without their homework. The diminutive book expands on the familiar tale of the dog eating your homework with more far out excuses like “my dog was swallowed up by another dog” and “my brother had his little problem again” (wherein he turns into a werewolf). In each of the brilliantly detailed illustrations, our unnamed hero desperately attempts to hold on to his homework in the midst of these bizarre occurrences. Whether he is kidnapped by the circus or swallowed by carnivorous plants, he diligently attempts to continue with his studies. Readers will enjoy pouring over the vintage inspired scenes with the added challenge of discovering where this exceptionally unlucky young student’s school books will end up next. Though the clever boy obviously has an incredible imagination, his teacher is not fooled by his scheming. The outlandish illustrations and witty tone of the book are reminiscent of legendary author/illustrators Maurice Sendak and Edward Gorey. Check out In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak and Cautionary Tales for Children by Hilaire Belloc for works in the same vein.
