Some characters are tragically beautiful, but Homeland is all about characters that are beautifully tragic. It's hard to pick just one star in this cast, but I will say that the story centers around Carrie, a brilliant CIA agent on the hunt for a suspected POW who has turned terrorist. Played by Claire Danes, Carrie also happens to suffer from bi-polar disorder, and it is riveting to watch and wonder whether her suspicions regarding a recently rescued prisoner of war are fact or a figment of her very active mind and imagination. The war hero, Brody, played by Damien Lewis, is also a mystery. Is he a hero or a terrorist in the making? It takes a long time for the story to unravel episode to episode, but you'll watch every second in anticipation of what could possibly happen next.

There are so many levels to the other characters as well,  with CIA agent, Saul Berensen, played by Mandy Patinkin, and Brody's wife who is played by Morena Baccarin of Firefly fame. They each add a layer of brilliance to a complex story line where you are never quite sure who the good guy is and who the bad guy is. If you like Homeland, you might also enjoy Luther, a British detective series with twists and turns that also keep you on the edge of your seat.
