The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie

Are you waiting for the next book of George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire (a.k.a. Game of Thrones)?  To quench your thirst for political treachery and gritty characters look no further than The Blade Itself, the first book in Joe Abercrombie’s The First Law trilogy.

Sand dan Glokta is an ex-military hero whose years of torture at the hands of the enemy have made him an effective torturer as an Inquisitor for the Union.

Logen Ninefingers is a warrior from the North whose skilled fighting has brought the deaths of many men. He earns the nickname “Bloody Nine” for the rage that sometimes overtakes him in battle and leaves both friend and foe in peril.

Bayaz is a magician from time gone by whose legend overshadows his reappearance on the scene. Is he really who he says he is and can he prove it?

These three characters along with another handful of players inhabit a world of warring factions, great adventures and deadly intentions. Characters drive this book along and the rotating chapters give you a firsthand perspective of the thoughts, fears and desires of the people who populate this world.

Check the VBPL catalog for The Blade Itself. If you enjoy it the series continues with Before They Are Hanged and Last Argument of Kings.
