Secrets of Eden by Chris Bohjalian

A murder-suicide in the small town of Haverill, VT is the precipitous event in Secrets of Eden from which all events in the novel flow to and from. The first section is narrated by Stephen Drew, a Baptist minister in the town, whose parishioner, Alice Hayward, is found dead at the hands of her husband George. Later do you find out that Stephen and Alice had an affair six months before her death.

The next three sections all have different narrators that put alternate spins on the night in question. As you learn more about the nature of the Hayward’s abusive relationship, the motives of the surrounding characters become increasingly hazy. What do you do when someone you care about is being abused by their spouse? Where do you draw the line?

Secrets of Eden will have you guessing until the end as the psychological twists continue to unravel. This is a character-driven novel where personal perspective matters so much with a crime so heinous.
