Max & Ruby's Treasure Hunt by Rosemary Wells

Max & Ruby’sTreasure Hunt, written and illustrated by Rosemary Wells, is a read-a-loud treasure. Two popular picture book characters, Max and his sister Ruby along with their friends Louise and Lily, set out to have a tea party on the grass. Right in the middle of their tea party picnic under a cloudless sky, a sudden thunderstorm erupts. The four bunnies dash for the house, Lily with her doll Dagmar in tow. Stuck inside on a rainy day! Grandma to the rescue! Grandma cleverly hides seven clues which lead to a tasty treasure. Everyone loves the idea of a treasure hunt including Max who has been standing on his head in the parlor to amuse himself.

This large format, interactive picture book includes seven clues based on familiar nursery rhymes hidden under lift-up flaps. Together Max, Ruby, Louise and Lily guess rhyming words to find each clue and finally, the treasure. Recognizing rhyming sounds helps prepare children for sounding out words when they learn to read, so this book is great for teaching early literacy skills.

Rosemary Wells’ illustrations combine individual frames of Max and Ruby searching for the treasure. Underneath the main scenes, circles depicting the nursery rhyme in question, give readers a visual queue.

Lily’s doll, Dagmar, gets lost during the treasure hunt. Will any of the bunnies remember where Lily left Dagmar? Wells keeps readers guessing right until the very end.

Max & Ruby’sTreasure Hunt, for children ages 3-5, is in the picture book section of the Virginia Beach Public Library. Make up some of your own rhymes and hide them around the house, write poems together, or read Zigby Hunts for Treasure by Brian Paterson and draw your own treasure map. Read, rhyme, and have fun!
