Level 2 by Lenore Appelhans

Felicia Ward lives in a hive world, Level 2, where she and her fellow drones spend most of their days watching memories from a chamber connected to the "Net." She and her fellow drones are dead, awaiting the day when they will move on to the next plane. Yet, there is more to the system than the mindless souls begin to imagine. That is until Julian, a boy from Felicia’s past, breaks her out of her hive. The Morati, those assigned by God to watch over Level 2, are keeping the residents from moving on to the next realm. Julian is a member of the rebels determined to set things right.

Level 2 is an immensely layered story, similar to the hives portrayed within the tale. In addition to Felicia’s interaction with Julian and the Morati, the audience becomes privy to memories of her life, including Julian, her parents, and Neil, the boyfriend she believes she left behind. Further, readers encounter Felicia’s friends within the hive, the inner workings of celestial bodies, and a new interpretation of the afterlife. Despite the number of plot lines zinging around the pages, Lenore Appelhans is adept at never causing confusion. The plot appears slightly slow to begin, yet details quickly unfold in the latter half of the novel, making it well worth the wait. Level 2 is the first novel in a projected Memory Chronicles series, future titles may expand on the final half of the first installment. Fans of Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series may enjoy this title in addition to Laini Taylor's Daughter of Smoke and Bone series.
