Team Human by Justine Larbalestier and Sarah Rees Brennan

Team Human by Justine Larbalestier and Sarah Rees Brennan

In case you're starting to get a little tired of all the teen vampire novels being published these days... this just might be the book for you.  Clearly spoofing the "Team Edward" and "Team Jacob"of Twilight fans, authors Justine Larbalestier and Sarah Rees Brennan have written a witty parody of the genre.

Mel and her best friend Cathy live in New Whitby, a town founded  hundreds of years ago by vampires fleeing persecution, but they rarely see the vampires who stick to their own part of town.  As they start the new school year, however, they are shocked to find that a teen vampire is attending with them.  To make matters worse, Cathy seems to be falling in love with him!

Torn between trying to stop Cathy's new romance with the vampire and trying to help another friend investigate her father's disappearance, Mel finds herself on an adventure she never expected.

At times hilarious and at other times touching and sweet, Larbalestier and Brennan have created a fun romp through the teen vampire genre.  This quick read would be great for middle school and high school readers (and adults too, of course!).

Readers may also enjoy a different but equally humorous take on vampires in Scott Westerfeld's Peeps, as well as Meg Cabot's Insatiable and its sequel Overbite
