The Book of Joe by Jonathan Tropper

After a seventeen year hiatus, novelist Joe Goffman returns to his hometown of Bush Falls to be with his ailing father. A return home after a long estrangement can be difficult and especially so in Joe’s case whose wildly successful novel, Bush Falls, is a tell-all that casts many of the town’s prominent citizens in a dark light.

His first day in town a woman dumps her milkshake over his head. That night Joe is beat up by the town bully. Later he is pulled over for speeding only to find an old high school adversary is writing the ticket after kicking in a tail light.

Amid the difficulties Joe does not go. He reunites with his old best friend Wayne. He tries to reconnect with his brother and his brother’s family. His high school sweetheart, Carly, is now the newspaper editor and he wants to see if the old spark still survives.

The Book of Joe is a darkly comic novel by an author who specializes in books about contemporary men trying to find their way through personal crises. Tropper’s This is Where I Leave You (ebook) and How to Talk to a Widower are good books to read next if you enjoy the world inhabited by Joe Goffman.

Check the VBPL catalog for The Book Of Joe. It is also available as an ebook.
