I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen

I Want My Hat Back, by Jon Klassen, is an absolutely amazing story about a bear who has lost his hat.  He asks several animals if they have seen his hat, but no one has.  But then the bear realizes that he has seen his hat...and that someone may have been lying to him...Will the bear retrieve his beloved hat?

What makes this story so great is the combination of simple, subdued images and crisp, short dialogue.  The pages are very clear and clutter-free, making the words and the artwork easy to absorb.  The mystery of the bear's missing hat is a fun plot that will engage preschool-aged children.  Children will also have a chance to practice their narrative skills with this story while they try to remember where they've seen the bear's hat.   Finally, this book introduces the concept of stealing and the impact it has on others while maintaining a light-hearted and humorous mood.  All in all, this adorable (and somewhat mischevious) book is excellent for ages 2 and up.

If you love the style of this book, be sure to reserve Klassen's newest title, This Is Not My Hat, which offers a window into the mind of a hat thief!  If you're looking for more books featuring animals with crisp colors and easy to read text, try out any of Eric Carle's excellent books, such as The Very Clumsy Click Beetle.
