I Am Legend by Richard Matheson

Robert Neville is the last human left alive. He has created a specially armed fortress of his house to combat them. He strings up fresh cloves of garlic around the house and puts up mirrors to deflect their interest in him. They want him so bad. His old neighbor Ben Cortman calls to him every night to come out and join their gruesome party.

In the morning he carts off the bodies from the carnage of the night before. Robert repairs shingles and siding that was damaged by the thrown rocks. In his car he drives to the library to try and figure out what happened to everyone. He stops by random houses and drives stakes into the hearts of the sick and comatose people. It is all he can do to try and reduce their countless numbers. He rushes home to get indoors before the darkness comes.

He is breaking down. The memories of his life before the plague haunt him. He drinks. He contemplates opening the door and letting them consume him. Will he do it? Will he become legend?
