Survival becomes the primary instinct when a person loses everything important in life. In Rosemary And Rue October Daye stumbles out of a dangerous magical spell, into a transformed and hostile world, losing her daughter and lover in a fourteen year absence. Living day to day becomes a hopeless, tedious experience, pressing on her to take a final, irrevocable step.
But October is a changeling, half fairy, half human, and she no longer can take that final option when she listens to three messages left on her answering machine one early morning in December.
Destiny, in the form of a Worded Binding message, literally comes calling.
A curse laid upon her by the late Countess Evening Winterrose compels her to leave her attempt at a 'normal' existence and resume her position of knight errant in the Faerie courts. October is forced to use her skills as a P.I. to hunt down Evening's murderer, or die trying. And her search will take her into the dark side of Faerie, where halfbreed children are bought and sold, and greed is paramount.
Author Seanan McGuire has a sure hand with her first venture into urban fantasy--it is gritty, dark, full of despair and unwanted but necessary decisions. October Daye is worth remembering, as she struggles through Faerie politics and intrigue, reluctantly gathering allies at all levels as well as coming to grips with her own personal anguish.
Subsequent stories are planned by the author, all taking place in the fog of San Francisco.
Enjoy this terrific first read--I sure did!
